Hoogstraten Strawberries

No one can resist the taste and quality of Hoogstraten strawberries. This is what lends our strawberries their unique prestige reputation - not only in Belgium but across the globe. Hoogstraten strawberries are increasingly finding their way onto foreign markets.

Strawberries are the main quality product for Coöperatie Hoogstraten. They account for a big part of the turnover: more than 30 million kg of strawberries are sold each year. They are all grown according to the Hoogstraten quality label.

With regard to research & development we work closely with Research Centre Hoogstraten (PCH), which conducts hands-on scientific research into strawberries, tomatoes and peppers. The centre also offers advice and training to growers.

International Mechanisation and Demonstration Strawberry fair (IMDS)

For this we integrate the biannual “International Mechanisation and Demonstration Strawberry Fair (IMDS)” of the Research Centre Hoogstraten in our International Strawberry Congress 2025.

This fair will be organized for the 13th time in the glasshouse complex of Research Centre Hoogstraten. During the exhibition there will be several demonstrations in the greenhouse and the field. In addition to mechanisation and demonstration, also other topics will be shown such as sustainable water use, integrated pest and disease control, and the digitization and automation of current strawberry cultivation. Furthermore, there will be guided tours organized by the research team to present the current research topics and shows the ongoing trials.

Coöperatie Hoogstraten

Coöperatie Hoogstraten cv is a marked presence in the horticultural sector, both in Belgium and abroad. Not only does the cooperative have a rich history, but as a contemporary company it is also ready to meet the future. The constant search for innovation and the commitment to sustainable entrepreneurship are key in this respect. Innovation is coupled with a continuous concern for quality, in products as well as in service. This is indispensable to maintain a close partnership with the growers. Hoogstraten strawberries are the pick of the crop at our organisation but over the years the cooperative has also built a reputation in greenhouse vegetables. It’s a remarkable story that continues to be written on a daily basis.

Research Centre Hoogstraten (PCH)

Research Centre Hoogstraten (PCH) is located in the north of Antwerp in the middle of an important horticultural area. Since its foundation in 1955 the centre plays an active role in the development and growth of the horticulture in the region.

Continuously carrying out new investments has made the growth of the centre possible to its current state of a modern and performant research institution. Our infrastructure with more than 3,3 hectares of glasshouses which consists of more than 50 compartments, 0,35 ha plastic greenhouse and tabletops, 0,75 ha open field and trayfield, and our new indoor vertical farm allows us to do research in a scientific and accurate manner. Acquiring the GEP (Good Experimental Practices) accreditation is important for the trials and the completion of research.

Research Centre Hoogstraten is specialized in the cultivation in glasshouses (strawberry, tomato, pepper) and the strawberry cultivation in soil and on tabletops. Practical and demonstrative research in these cultures delivers information and answers to questions risen at professional horticultural companies and growers. In collaboration with other research institutions different programs can be initiated to solve more fundamental problems in the above mentioned cultures. The transfer of trial results towards the growers and other scientific groups is an important challenge for the Research Centre.

To attend roughly 200 strawberry growers the Research Centre has a Consultancy Team Strawberry which delivers professional advice inland and abroad. One of the major strengths of the team is its close interaction with the ongoing research at the Research Centre: the advice given by the Consultancy team can always be backed up with objectively obtained trial results and the experience from the field delivers necessary input in the setup of trials in the research program.

Horticulture is one of the engines of the economical development and prosperity in the region. Research Centre Hoogstraten wants to act as a backbone in accomplishing this continuous evolution through its research program, consultancy and horticultural services.

VCBT / KU Leuven

The quality of fruit and vegetables is essential to the Belgian horticultural sector. It is therefore important to produce, store and commercialise these products in ideal conditions. The non-profit organisation Flanders Centre of Postharvest Technology (VCBT) has been established in 1997 as a public-private partnership of the Association of Belgian Fruit and Vegetable Cooperatives and the University of Leuven. Its mission is to introduce innovative technologies and provide extension services related to storage technology and quality of fruit and vegetables to producers and co-operatives. Since 2004 the VCBT is officially recognised as experimental station.

To support these activities, the VCBT carries out both practically oriented as well as fundamental research related to these themes. The VCBT has a unique refrigeration infrastructure for (dynamic) controlled atmosphere storage research and an ISO-17025 accredited laboratory with advanced measurement techniques for all quality attributes of fruit and vegetables.

The VCBT closely collaborates with the BIOSYST-MeBioS division of the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) that carries out fundamental research related to storage and quality of horticultural produce. As both groups are housed in the same building, the conditions are ideal for mental cross-fertilisation between university researchers and those of the VCBT. Further, the VCBT
closely collaborates with all other experimental stations in Belgium and with research groups all over the world.
